Yesterday was Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer. I don’t need to remind everyone what the holiday really stands for, but I wanted to tell you about an experience I had recently. I was at an airport waiting to board my plane. My boarding group was the last and I was waiting on an airport chair until my group was called. The bank of chairs I was seated in was right at the entrance to the jet way so the first group of boarders were lined up right in front of me. A young soldier in camo motioned for me to take a spot in front of him in the line which I did. When walking down the jet way, I turned and told the young man “thank you for your service” to which he replied “No problem, Ma’am.” No problem? No problem that you are away from your family for long periods of time? No problem that you are living in harsh conditions? No problem that you are putting yourself in harms way? I was so humbled by his answer; like it was no big deal. It is a HUGE deal and I cannot image how selfless the men and women serving are. They are the REAL heroes, not spoiled actors, diva singers and entertainers, morally bankrupt politicians, or steroid using athletes. I pray for the men and women protecting our country everyday and there are truly not words to express my appreciation and gratitude. The next time you see someone in uniform, please say thank you.
