The “New” Mary Kay

I have to be one of maybe ten people left in the world who has never tried Mary Kay . Yes, that’s right…I’ve NEVER been to a Mary Kay party or had a consultant. No kidding! I’d heard through the blogosphere that Miss Mary had had a makeover, so I was anxious to try the line. I was sent a selection of best sellers and new releases. Several lovely products arrived in my mailbox, so I started with my favorite makeup product of choice–a palette. The Mary Kay® Compact Mini ($16) houses three eye shadows, a blush, and a cute compartment for applicators. These mini-compacts are magnetized, so you can customize them with your choice of Mary Kay refills. It’s the perfect size for tossing in a makeup bag or purse. The mini-compact I received has Golden Vanilla eye shadow, a matte yellow beige; Lavender Fog, a matte dusty grey lavender; and Truffle, a shimmery browned eggplant shade. These three colors make for a great smoky eye. The blush shade is Shy Blush, a pretty pinky peach with just the slightest bit of a sheen that brightens up the face nicely.

Mary Kay Eye Shadows

The Mary Kay mineral eye shadows are not as pigmented as most brands I’m used to, and it took a lot of layering even with primer. However, the shimmery mineral shadows did seem to perform better. I was also given three single mineral shadows to try in these beautiful jewel tones–Black Pearl, a shimmery charcoal grey; Sweet Plum, a shimmery soft plum; and Midnight Star, a shimmery medium blue with blue sparkles. These really are gorgeous shades, I just wish they were as pigmented on the lids as they look in the pan and that they would last longer.

I had much better luck with the Mary Kay® NouriShine Plus Lip Glosses ($14). There are fourteen fabulous colors, and the pigment is rich and dense. The mineral-based formula includes vitamins A, C, and E. These glosses are smooth, have a pleasant vanilla scent, and wear for about three hours, which is pretty average. They have a creamy, glossy shine. I tried Café Au Lait, a pretty browned pink that’s perfect for everyday; Mango Tango, a bright electric orange with slight shimmer; and Rock ‘n’ Red, a creamy bright Hollywood red.

TimeWise® Microdermabrasion Set ($55)

We all know how important exfoliation is to help us over-40 women retain that youthful glow that seems to be slipping away. Getting rid of dry, dead skin cells is key. This two-step system works beautifully.

Step 1 is Refine: This scrub has loads of very fine crystals to clean out those pores and slough off the dead skin. One thing you MUST watch out for if you are using a scrub on your face is the quality. You want fine, even particles with no ragged edges that could cut or tear the skin. The Refine step uses the key exfoliating ingredients which are used by dermatologists. I really felt as though I were getting a professional dermabrasion treatment. Just be careful not to scrub too hard!

Step 2 is Replenish: This serum is something special! It contains vitamins, antioxidants and anti-irritants. It nourishes the soft, smooth skin revealed by Step 1: Refine. I found it to be very soothing and quick absorbing, and I love the velvety feel on my skin. After a scrub, ALWAYS use a good moisturizer to replace moisture. I like the added benefit of all the good ingredients in the serum.

Completed Mary Kay look:

Overall Thoughts: The new Mary Kay has some hits and misses. The misses are the mascaras (so much so that I didn’t even write about them) and the mineral eye shadows. Mary Kay needs to improve the mascara formulas and infuse the mineral eye shadows with more pigment. The Mineral Cheek Color, NouriShine Plus Lip Glosses and TimeWise® Microdermabrasion Set were all hits for me, as well as the cute customizable mini-compact. Café Au Lait has become a makeup bag staple for a pretty wearable everyday lip color, the mini-compact is great for touch-ups or to throw in your bag on a night out, and the TimeWise® Microdermabrasion Set is on par with other more expensive treatments.

  1. That’s too bad the mineral eye shadows were a disappointment. I used to love their regular eyeshadows.

  2. MK eye makeup remover is my Holy Grail. No matter what else I try, I always go back to it.

The best beauty tip I have ever learned is to tightline. It makes all the difference in the world with my blonde/red eyelashes!

I would love to try the “new” Mary Kay cosmetics. Back in the 70’s, my sister went to a Mary Kay party and brought home some wonderful makeup that I, being age 13, would love to sneak into her room and play with. Back then, I believe all of the eyeshadows were made to be mixed with water, and that made all the difference in color payoff and longevity.
