tarte Be MATTEnificent Amazonian Eye and Cheek Palette: Review, Pics and Swatches

tarte Matte Palette

This review is looong overdue. The tarte be MATTEnificent Eye & Cheek Palette ($36) was released with the Spring 2014 collection and is all matte palette. Many over 40 beauties shy away from shimmery eye shadows so this is perfect for those of you that prefer matte. Personally, I like to mix matte and shimmery together, but prefer matte shades to contour.

Can we interrupt this review to talk about the packaging for a minute? WOW! How beautiful is this palette??? It looks like a slice of those rocks called thunder eggs that have the beautiful striations of color inside. The palette is a very substantial metal with a lacquer-look cover and a full mirror. Housed inside are six eye shadows, two eye shadow/liners, one blush and a double-ended brush.

The shades are:

  • eye shadow/liner in dream & chocolate (black & brown)
  • eye shadow in view from the taupe (taupe)
  • eye shadow in peach for the stars (peach)
  • eye shadow in sand out from the crowd (warm beige)
  • eye shadow in pink outside the box (soft pink)
  • eye shadow in rose to the occasion (rosy pink)
  • eye shadow/liner in don’t stand black (black)
  • eye shadow in two plums up (deep plum brown)
  • blush in Elevated (nude rose)

These shadows are a bit powdery so you will want to use a primer so they “stick” to the eye and pat them on rather than sweep so you don’t get any fallout. That said, the texture is typical of tarte: buttery and smooth with good lasting power. I did find the lighter shades to be very similar–you may not be able to see much difference between them when applied. The purple and taupe shades are very, very pretty. The blush is really gorgeous; a soft rose and of course I love the amazonian clay formula, especially because it lasts longer than Jennifer Anisten’s engagement and that’s a good looooong time!

Also included in the palette are instructions for 2 different looks–I just love it when brands do this!

Bottom Line: the velvety soft eye shadows in this palette are great for both warm and cool toned gals and the blush is exceptional. The palette also represents a great value!

Totally agree a little shimmer and matte never hurt when you are 40 and over, it is all about how you mix/ blend. The purple matte is gorgeous!

I really like the agate design used for the packaging, and the shades are fantastic. Too bad about the powderiness, but nothing a good primer can’t fix.
