WEN Cleansing Conditioner from Chaz Dean has been a lifesaver for my hair. It really does make my hair soft and as silky as satin sheets. It’s a great product, I love it!
First let me tell you a little bit about my hair. It’s very fine and has virtually no body. It’s color treated, it doesn’t like to hold a curl and can get dry on the ends. Yeah, it’s a problem. More than one stylist has told me I have a lot of hair it just has a very fine texture. I don’t believe any of them. There I said it! WEN tamed my flyways, brought my color to life (I had people ask me if I had re-colored my hair), made the texture like silky soft, and conditioned the ends. What more could I ask for? Weeeel, at $29 for a 16 oz. bottle it gets expensive. Add to that price the fact that you use 12-40 pumps (depending on your hair length) of product, you can quickly say buh-bye to a LOT of dead presidents!
So, It’s no surprise that so many brands are trying to copy this iconic formula. I tried Hair ONE ($9.99 for 12 oz.) by Sally Beauty and it left me very disappointed. It looks like WEN, however it does NOT have the same benefits. I have very fine hair and after shampooing with Hair ONE, my hair was a HUGE tangled mess–I couldn’t get a comb through. The performance in general was a big let down.
And then along came Salon Grafix Cleaning Conditioner–now that’s more like it! Salon Grafix Healthy Hair Nutrition says “Our sulfate-free, gentle cleansing formula re-balances the amount of natural oils your hair needs, leaving your hair stronger and shinier, without weighing it down.” I would agree. I won’t go into how to use these products, you can read about that here on my original post on WEN.
Let’s compare shall we? Remember this is my opinion and your experience may vary depending on your hair.

I haven’t tried Wen, but I really enjoy the Salon Grafix cleansing conditioner as well. I used up one bottle and went without it for a while (I don’t use it every day – I use regular shampoo and conditioner too), and after picking up my second bottle, I realized how much I missed having it around. It’s great for those lazy days when I want to skip a step in my routine. I just put it on when I hop in the shower and let it soak in while I do everything else and then rinse.
Believe it or not, I still have not tried Wen, but have been wanting to for some time now. However, your excellent review has me very intrigued by Salon Grafix- which I must now try!!! Thank you! xxoo
Thanks for the 411. I was less than pleased with Hair One, too, but refuse to pay the Wen price.
I was so happy to see this review! I’ve been dying to find a replacement for WEN. My hair sounds very similar to yours (very fine, tons of it, easily tangled/drying). I was spending way too much on WEN, but was missing it when I didn’t have it. I couldn’t believe it when I finally found a positive review for a replacement. I’ll be picking this up on my very next trip to CVS!
I don’t know anything about WEN or sulfate-free hair products, so I have to ask, is this usually used alone? Does this replace a conditioner AND shampoo?
yes and yes!
