Splurge v.s. Steal – Shu Uemura Volume Maker v.s. Bombshell Big Hair Powder

Shu Uemura Volume Maker

Michael O’Rourke Rock Your Hair Big Bombshell Hair Powder

Hair powders and dry shampoos can be both a lifesaver and a time saver—I’m so glad they are back in fashion! For years I had an oily scalp and had to wash my hair every day. Now that I’m older I can get by with every other day or sometimes even more than that, however on the days I don’t wash my hair, it is, as they used to call me in high school—“flat as a board.” That’s where dry shampoo is a life AND time saver for me. The best ones add volume and life back into my hair on no-poo days.

I recently tried the very effective and very expensive Shu Uemura Volume Maker. I have to admit, this hair powder did an exceptional job at volumizing. The other terrific advantage Shu Uemura Volume Maker has over other brands is the unique packaging. The application method is a brush. This makes getting the powder to the roots a snap! There is also no fallout, spillage or powder getting all over the bathroom. The downside is that this product retails for $45!

My friend and fellow beauty blogger Phyrra has fine, straight hair like me and she recommended Rock Your Hair Bombshell Big Hair Powder, so I HAD to try it! It has a lightweight texture that adds mega volume. I can honestly say that Bombshell Big Hair Powder gives me as much volume for $17 (sometimes less depending on where purchased) as the more expensive Shu Uemura Volume Maker.

 However, there are differences:

 PROS: Shu Uemura Volume Maker

  •  Clear so there is never any sign of it in your hair
  • The brush makes application more precise—you just have click the bottom of the brush twice to get the right amount
  •  The powder itself is of a finer texture

CONS: Shu Uemura Volume Maker

  • Price

PROS: Bombshell Big Hair Powder

  • Gives BIG mega volume!
  • Gives lots of texture
  • Price—only $17 for .9 oz—can be found for less

 CONS: Bombshell Big Hair Powder

  • Packaged in the usual shaker container
  • Feels a little “thicker” in the hair

Overall Thoughts: Both products add instant volume (even at the roots), neither leave hair feeling dirty or gritty. The Shu Uemura Volume Maker wins points for the brush delivery system, but Bombshell Big Hair Powder is over 260% cheaper! You make the call beauties. I’m going to save my money for something important like lipstick or mascara.
