Leave it to bareMinerals to revolutionize the concept of foundation AGAIN! bareMinerals bareSkin Serum Foundation is both a mineral foundation and a skincare serum in one. It provides coverage as it treats your skin. Sound similar to a BB cream? Well it’s not. bareSkin has lots more coverage than a BB cream which is good news for me and most over 40 beauties. It is however, extremely lightweight on the skin–it truly does NOT feel like you have makeup on. The consistency is unlike any foundation I’ve ever tried–it is very thin and watery and the first time I used it I used waaay to much. I thought I needed a lot to cover the redness in my skin and my dark spots, but I learned quickly that just isn’t the case. A few drops on the special brush (which you do NEED) is all it takes to cover your entire face with a little extra for spot coverage on problem areas.
“Clinically proven tone-correcting mineral foundation and brightening serum in one. Created with exceptional purity in mind, this ultra-thin, skin-perfecting fluid provides seamless adjustable coverage, a natural finish and the look and feel of beautiful skin while delivering a noticeably brighter, more youthful appearance. Made with the bare minimum ingredients and formulated without oil, silicone, parabens or fragrance. It’s like nothing you’ve ever felt before.”
bareMinerals bareSkin Serum Foundation is supposed to be for all skin types but honestly, I cannot see it working for someone with oily skin. It felt slightly greasy to me and I have combination skin. You must shake the bottle vigorously before applying to make sure the pigment does not separate from the fluid. It does glide on the skin nicely but I felt it wasn’t really “sticking” to my face–like it was going to slide off. It looks somewhat matte upon contact, but then transforms into a dewy finish after application. I’m not that crazy about dewy finishes on my skin as I feel they make me look greasy, although I will say this is the best dewy finish I have tried–it’s not overly shiny. bareMinerals claims the coverage is customizable but as I mentioned, the more I used, the worse it got. I think I used about six drops the first time I tried it and I looked like I had a cakey mask on. The second time with 2-3 drops was much better, however, the coverage was very sheer–nice for summer but I will want more coverage for fall and winter.
The Perfecting Face Brush is a MUST with this foundation. Applying with your fingertips or a sponge just doesn’t cut it with this foundation. The brush is specially designed with a “well” in the middle to hold the watery foundation making to easier to apply and buff. It works quite well and I definitely suggest picking it up if you try the foundation–it imparts a more natural look by buffing on.
Combining skincare with foundation isn’t a new idea, look at how many BB and CC creams are on the market. When bareMinerals does things, though I’ve found they usually do it right.
Unfortunately bareMinerals bareSkin isn’t for me, I prefer a more stain finish and I need a foundation to last all day. bareSkin was gone from my chin by lunch time and my cheeks by about 5 pm. When I touched my face, I felt it was going to come off on my fingers and I did notice that it indeed did transfer to my collar. I haven’t noticed any brightening effect–maybe that will come with more continued use. Most bloggers are raving about it, but it just doesn’t work for my skin. I think it would be great for beauties with dry skin, especially those with very dry skin.
- No-makeup feel with very natural look
- Skin-loving formula. No silicone. No oil. No parabens. No fragrance. Hypoallergenic. Non-comedogenic. Dermatologist tested.
- Coconut-derived base with jojoba-coated mineral pigments and non-chemical broad spectrum SPF 20
- One to two weightless drops smooth your complexion
- No brightening effect (it may take quite some time)
- Did not stay in place all day, wore off in spots
- Transferred to clothes
- Hard to get the coverage I wanted–too much looks cakey, too little too sheer
bareMinerals bareSkin Serum Foundation retails for $29, is available in 20 shades and can be found at bareMinerals.com and boutiques, Ulta, Sephora and QVC. The Face Perfecting Brush is $28.
Bottom Line: bareMinerals bareSkin Serum Foundation provides sheer coverage, good for your skin ingredients and a nice finish. For me, the fact that it didn’t last on my skin was a deal breaker. Those with drier skin types might love it!
