I’m a little late to the party on these new liquid lip colors from Maybelline: in case you’re running late too I’d like to give you my opinion. There are 20(!) permanent shades of Maybelline Color Elixirs ($8.99) that include both creams and shimmers. Everything I’ve tried from Maybelline lately has been outstandin; drugstore makeup is really catching up to department stores brands and Maybelline seems to be leading the way. Beware, here are something special and definitely gush-worthy.
Packaging is a clear tube (love being able to see the color) with an applicator that is very similar to the higher-end YSL Glossy Stains (YSL and Maybelline are both owned by L’Oreal). The wand is in an arrow shape which makes application easy-peasy; one side is perfect for creating a precise cupid’s bow and the other side is great for gliding on the lower lip in one easy swipe. Color Elixirs are smaller than their Colorsensational counterparts–just 0.17 fl. oz., about the size of the L’Oreal Extraordinaire Lip Colors (reviewed here).
Wow! I love the texture of these glosses, they would surely please Goldilocks because they’re not too thin so they disappear too soon, and not so thick that they feel gloppy and sticky. There is a lot to like about Maybelline Color Elixirs; they feel cushiony on the lips, are moisturizing and have a nice glossy shine. Pigmentation varies by shade, the two I bought, Blush Essence and Breathtaking Apricot have good pigment and are among the medium shades within the color selection. Since I haven’t yet tried any darker shades, I’m not sure if they leave a stain behind.
Breathtaking Apricot is a warm pinky coral with barely-there shimmer. The finish is semi-opaque with nice shine. It lasts about four hours on me– pretty long lasting for a gloss!
Blush Essence is a cool medium pink with subtle soft white shimmer. The color looks more mauve in the tube, but on my lips it’s a lovely pinky beige, a MLBB (mylips but better) shade that I’m loving. There must be some warm undertones, because most cool toned lipstick really washes me out. In the tube, Breathtaking Apricot was my first choice: there was a buy one get one half off sale so I picked up Blush Essence as my second choice and after wearing it, it’s become one of the best gloss shades I have in my stash!
Maybelline Color Elixirs have a candy scent I can’t quite place but it’s very faint–I had to actually put my nose up to the applicator to smell it, still for those of you who are sensitive to fragrance, it’s worth a mention.
Bottom Line: If you like liquid lipsticks/or non-sticky glosses, Maybelline Color Elixirs are an excellent choice that rival department store brands. The texture, quality, lasting power and wide shade selection are all excellent. I’m going to check out more shades–these are gush-worthy and highly recommended!!
P.S.-I like these much better than the L’Oreal Extraordiniare Lip Colors–just sayin’.
