Lip Crayon Smack Down! NARS v.s. Tarte v.s. Clinique

[wp_ad_camp_1]

This spring the trend for lips is the Lip Crayon. Having no less than 11 lipsticks and glosses in my bag at one time, I love the convenience of lip crayons. Several brands have crayons out this spring–let’s take a look and see who will take the coveted Prime Beauty Trophy.

NARS took its’ beloved Velvet Matte Lip Pencils and created the new NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils ($24). In six gorgeous colors and a high gloss finish, these chubby sticks truly are a gloss in a convienient pencil. Released on February 1, these have already become a favorite.

 Available colors are:

  • Baroque – A bold raspberry sorbet shade; the type of regal color frequently associated with its namesake artistic style.
  • Happy Days – A fresh pink coral infused with gold shimmer that’s as flirty and fun-loving as the TV sitcom its name is inspired by.
  • New Lover – A strawberry pink, laced with gold that mimics the look of overly-kissed lips.
  • Frivolous – A flirty and frothy iridescent seashell pink, that is anything but serious.
  • Hopi – A honey beige hue inspired by the Native American tribe of northeastern Arizona.
  • Club Mix – A sheer grape color that’s sophisticated enough for day, but seductive enough for a night on the town.

I purchased Happy Days, a peachy pink coral that I just love. At first swipe, I was put off by the synthetic, strong plastic smell, however it disappates quickly. The gloss pencil feels very smooth and has great pigmentation. The formula uses Vitamins A & E to make these very hydrating and a joy to wear. As is typical with any gloss, I got about three hours wear. I can’t stress enough how beautiful these colors are–next on my list are Baroque and Club Mix. I made a special trip to Sephora today to take pics for you and when I pulled my camera out of my bag, the batteries were dead. Note to self: check camera batteries every time! I’m going to do the next best thing and refer you to The Beauty Look Book where Sabrina has good swatches. The only negative I can see to these pencils is that they DO need to be sharpened–bummer.

Also new this spring, Tarte has taken their popular LipSurgence Lip Tints and reworked them to add a tinch (my word–a cross between a tad & a pinch) of shimmer and a whole lotta shine. Tada! Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Lusters ($24)!

 Shades include:

  •  fever (red)
  •  pouty (berry)
  •  frisky (bright pink)
  •  adored (light pink)
  •  glisten (peach)
  •  buff (nude)

Allowing the same convienient crayon packaging the other two brands have, these are twist up–a definite plus for me. Tarte’s LipSurgence is different in that their crayons have a nice minty taste and scent that feels fresh and cooling. Another plus is that Tarte leaves a slight stain on your lips so when the gloss wears off, you are still left with color on your lips. I do wish they were longer lasting but I don’t expect glosses to last longer than 3 hours anyway. Tarte has also released the shade Peaceful which was formerally only available in a set. It’s a big fav of mine–a natural peach. Tarte LipSurgence now comes in three finishes–tints, matte and lusters. Tarte Lip Surgence Lip Tints are on sale for 20% off until Feb. 28th. These cuties are Clinique’s Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balms ($15) and come in 8 neutral shades to flatter a variety of skin tones.  These are twist up so no sharpener needed and just one quick swipe delivers a sheer tint of color. There is not a lot of variation between the colors, however, if you like the feel of a balm and like sheer shades, you need to check out Clinique Chubby Sticks.

 Shades are:

  •  Richer Raisin
  • Whole Lotta Honey
  • Fuller Fig
  • Mega Melon
  • Chunky Cherry
  • Woppin’ Watermelon
  • Super Strawberry
  • Graped-Up

Clinique Chubby Sticks L to R: Top row: Richer Raisin, Whole Lotta Honey, Fuller Fig, Mega Melon Bottom row: Chunky Cherry, Woppin’ Watermelon, Super Strawberry, Graped-Up

And the Prime Beauty Trophy Goes To……. Tarte LipSurgence Lip Lusters!!!! and the crowd goes wild!!!!

NARS Velvet Gloss Pencils: A           gorgeous colors, high shine, great pigmentation, non-sticky. A minus for having to sharpen & a strong plastic smell at first swipe

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Luster: A+     good color selection, non-sticky, available in three finshes, leaves a nice stain behind, lovely minty taste and smell, twist up, high gloss

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balms: B+    moisturizing, sheer shades, twist up crayon, great price at $15, not much color variation or not as glossy as the other brands
