There is something to be said about buying your own Valentines gift.
- You get EXACTLY what your heart desires
- Whatever you choose fits
- There are no flowers to wilt and as Charlotte from Sex in the City says “no filler flowers” meaning cheap dyed carnations
- You don’t have to read a card that was chosen at the 11th hour when the only thing left was “Happy Valentines Day to My Secret Pal”-don’t laugh, it’s happened to me
- You don’t have to worry about getting the ultimate sweet yet sexy fishing pole your husband, boyfriend or significant other thinks you need
This year I’m buying myself a beautiful Valentines Day gift because… well…. I love me! This is what I chose and I am overjoyed with my choice.

Lancôme La vie est belle L’Eau de Parfum was developed by perfumers Olivier Polge, Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo. Its composition includes notes of Florentine Iris pallida, iris aldehyde, jasmine sambac, Tunisian orange blossom, Indonesian patchouli, and a “gourmand accord” of vanilla, tonka bean, praline, black currant and pear.
This fragrance is a light, feminine and delicious floral. It’s easy to wear and I’m sure it will attract a wide audience. Don’t however, mistake this juice for boring. In fact, La vie est belle is quite the opposite of traditional perfumes. The arrangement of notes is the reverse of typical. Normally, a floral/gourmand opens with the floral notes in the starring role, followed by a warm base. However, in this fragrance, the gourmand accord appears much earlier with a sugar note and a mix of chocolate and nuts. No worries, it doesn’t smell like a snickers candy bar, rather a more grown-up, gourmet version than the normal synthetic chocolate notes. I’m not one for foodie scents so thankfully these gourmand notes are tempered with bergamot and patchouli that soften as the fragrance dries down. There is also a soft jasmine and a hint of vanilla present which add a creamy sweetness and warmth to cut the sweetness further. For a fragrance billed as “the first ever iris gourmand.” I cannot detect any iris in the heart of La Vie Est Belle. I smell no green or woodiness, but then my nose is not the most sophisticated so consider the source.
The sillage is noteworthy, but not overpowering. I have moved to a different office that has a wall of windows (yay) and is close to an outside entrance so it is very cold and, therefore, I have to keep the door closed to stay warm. Inevitably, when my co-workers visit I hear the comment “Wow, it smells so good in here!”
The bottle feels heavy and powerful, yet feminine with the finishing touch of a gray organza ribbon. The sturdy box does not take away from it loveliness. It has minimal writing and logo and has a gray satin ribbon as a closure. It makes for a very nice and graceful presentation.
Prime Beauty Grade: A
Overall Thoughts: Don’t let the original fruitiness and sweetness of La vie est belle seem too ho-hum, for this fragrance is something special with the reverse arrangement of notes making it interesting as it dries down. It is elegant, feminine and polished. Many fragrances don’t last with my chemistry, but this one lasts all day and has good sillage. I have never been a fan of
Lancôme perfume, but my experience with La vie est belle
may change that!
