Back in April I was able to visit the flagship Kiehl’s store in New York City. It is the original store and pays homage to the history of a apothecary store turned skincare/beauty brand that has been operating since 1851. The store, on historical ‘Pear Tree Corner’ has two entrances; one on the new side and the other, the older ‘original’ side to the store.
On the original side, memorabilia abounds, with vintage bottles of lotions and potions stacked in wooden boxed shelves. My mother had a die-hard love of antiques, and even though as a child I wasn’t especially thrilled with the “old” things that adorned our home, I have come to love and admire antiques as well. The three original chandeliers that still hang in the original part of the store are exquisite and give the feeling of a more grand and opulent time and place. One of my favorite parts of the store is what is now the gift wrapping area. It used to be the actual pharmacy. It is surrounded with huge thick marble counters and looks to have the original bar stools. The back of the bar is a lovely hand carved design in black.
On the new side of the store, Kiehls’ baby products are displayed along with the “Baby Wall”–photos of babies whose parents are either Kiehl’s customers or employee’s. It a very sweet and sentimental touch. And for those of you who are parents to four-legged babies, there is a wall of photos for you too!
The new side of the store has displays of Aaron Morse (owner) collectibles. An adventurer, the collection includes several motorcycles, photos of a climbing exhibition to Mount Everest (using Kiehl’s products of course) and even a replica of a plane Mr. Morse piloted. This is a fun place to be! If you ever get a chance to go, do it! The store is full of history and fun memorabilia. I could have spent hours browsing and learning the history of Mr. Morse and the store but was time to talk about ME!
While I was in the store I had a skin consultation. I appreciated how thorough the consultation was–from the origin of the ingredients to the explanation of how and why a product works. When asked what my primary skin concerns were I said sun damage/age spots and wrinkles–a common ailment of women over 40. One of the products recommended for me was Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution ($49.50), a serum to help ‘correct’ dark spots and even out skin tone.
Clearly Corrective’s primary ingredient is “Activated C”, a new Vitamin C derivative. Kiehl’s chemists found that Activated C adds an innovative step in the fight against unwanted pigmentation. Activated C breaks up existing melanin clusters as well as inhibits the formation of new clusters. Another important benefit is that Vitamin C only affects pigmentation in problem areas so it’s safe to use all over your face. Not only is this formula photostablized (very important as Vitamin C becomes destabilized with exposure to sun and air) but it is silicone-free and has no optical diffusers to mask the problem rather than treat it. There is also White Birch Extract to restore hydration and nutrients to the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin and Peony Extract, a medicinal antioxidant to help protect against free radicals in the formula.
According to Kiehl’s:
• 2 weeks: 55% of women have a significant reduction in dark spot intensity
• 4 weeks: 69% of women demonstrated a continued reduction in dark spot intensity and 73% have a reduction in acne scarring. Reduction in other skin discolorations in 69%.
• 8 weeks: 87% clinically demonstrated a more uniform skin tone and clarity
I’ve been using Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution twice a day for almost 8 weeks now. The texture of the serum is very light, almost like water. It does not ball up under moisturizer or foundation and absorbs VERY quickly. Initially I was worried it would dry out my skin but this has not been the case at all–unlike other spot correctors I’ve tried. Unlike the clinical group, I didn’t notice a “significant reduction” in two weeks. BUT, I am thrilled to say I do now!!!! I have tried many, many products of this type to diminish or (hopefully) eliminate my dark spots, but I can honestly say none that have worked this well this quickly. Most of the other products consisted of several steps, I have a hard enough time with my three -step cleanse, tone, moisturize! This is ONE product that is quick and easy to use. I am good about using a scrub for exfoliation a few times a week so that helps too.
The biggest area of concern for me is my forehead–lots of “freckles” (okay age spots–sheesh). You can tell where my bangs used to part as the left side of my forehead has most of the spots. I did concentrate on this area a bit more than the rest of my face– meaning I put extra solution on that area. The two darkest spot are still visible–although MUCH lighter and the lighter smattering of spots are gone! The other areas of concern are along my upper cheeks bones on each side. That area seems to be a bit more stubborn but the spots are lighter. I. Am. Thrilled!!!!
Honestly beauties, I could kiss the Kiehl’s chemists that created Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution. It has made BIG changes in my skin, especially my worst problem area!! As a beauty blogger I test hundreds of products and some work well, others not so much. This product was a miracle worker for my pigmentation problems!! After 8 weeks I still have half a bottle left and will continue to use it twice a day until I run out and then I’ll buy more! I’ve also started using it on my hands and chest. The skin on my chest is thin and very sensitive from so much sun damage and I get absolutely no stinging or irritation from Clearly Corrective.
Bottom Line: I highly recommend Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution if you have age spots or hyperpigmentation, like most over 40 women do. The formula is effective, is suitable for sensitive skin, is not irritating , is easy and quick to use and works! Please be aware that ANY pigmentation product takes time to work. You will NOT see results in two- four weeks. Keep at it and at the 8-10 week mark you WILL notice a difference. Oh, and if you are in NYC, stop by the Flagship Kiehl’s store!
