Dark, mysterious and dangerous. Venture into this new collection inspired by the Mortal Instruments City of Bones. Everything you need to create an innocent day look inspired by Clary or a sultry night look inspired by Isabel.
Um, okay I admit I had no idea what this meant when I spied the NYX Mortal Instruments Parallel Worlds Makeup Collection at Ulta. All I know is my frugal meter started going off when I realized I could get six full sized NYX products in awesome packaging for only $24.99 and even better on sale for $19.99!
For the most part, I am happy and content with my age… I mean I think I’m pretty damn cool for an old lady, yo. However, at times like this, I do feel a little out of touch. I was sure Mortal Instruments Parallel Worlds was a video game–it totally looks looks that way, right? So to keep myself informed, up-to-date and generally ultra hip, I went to my younger bloggers friends and learned that this was the first in a fantasy series of books that has now been made into a movie. Sound familiar? *coughTwilightcough.*
Anywho, it’s what’s inside that had me excited, although the packaging is pretty great. This NYX kit comes in a heavy cardboard cube with a pretty black faceted finial on top–nice touch! Inside is a black chiffon pouch filled with the goodies. Each item can be bought separately but you can save about$7 with the collector’s box.
The NYX Mortal Instruments City of Bones Makeup Collection includes:
- NYX Smokey Eyeshadow Palette
- NYX Blush in Pinched
- NYX Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul
- NYX Studio Black Liquid Liner
- NYX Jumbo Pencil in Cashmere
- NYX Le Frou Frou Volumizing Mascara
- An instruction sheet for both looks–daytime and sultry
Smokey Eyeshadow Palette – all of the shadows are quite pigmented and have good wear time. The Good: no super glittery shades or fallout, The Bad: I found the two darkest shades, matte gray and charcoal to be somewhat patchy. NYX eye shadows have been inconsistent in the past, so this is something you should be aware of. Overall I’m not so impressed.
Blush in Pinched – NYX has some of the best, most pigmented blushes in the drugstore aisle. Pinched is a lovely pink with peach undertones and slight gold shimmer. Don’t worry beauties, it’s sophisticated shimmer and totally suitable for over 40 gals. NYX blushes are very long wearing and there is a nice selection of shades too. This is a great universally flattering blush every over 40 woman should have in her collection and at $5 there is no reason not to!
NYX Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul – matte lipsticks and glosses are not my favorite– I feel they tend to show every lip line and dry patch my lips have, but I’ve got to say I really, really like this one! It is thicker than a normal gloss and super pigmented. It does leave a stain behind too which is nice. The shade is very pretty and again, I believe flattering for all skin tones. No wonder these have a cult following!
Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cashmere – I love a good eye pencil and this pretty light yellow gold has a nice texture and makes a good base for just about any eyeshadow.
Studio Liquid Liner in Extreme Black – this brush provides the thinnest line I’ve ever seen making it great for tightlining and under lower lashes. Of course you can press harder on the brush and get a thicker line too. The color is a shiny patent leather black. For me this brush is harder to use than the more expensive liquid liners in my collection: Make Up For Ever, Stila, LORAC, but you can’t beat the price!
Boudoir Mascara in Le Frou Frou – a decent mascara with deep black pigment but you KNOW I’m a mascara snob so this didn’t impress me. I’ll pay more and stick with my Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara (review here) and be happy as a drag queen with grande lashes!
Bottom Line: Out of the 6 full-sized products in the NYX Mortal Instruments Parallel Worlds kit, I am very happy with 3. I only paid $19.99 so that still represents a good value and I’m not unhappy that I purchased this. Keep in mind though, that as a beauty blogger I get to try TONS of products and have developed a more critical eye than most people, so you might like more of the products than I do. If you are new the NYX brand, this is a great and inexpensive way to try the brand. I also think this would make a fab gift for a teen who has read the books or seen the movie, not only for the makeup selection but for the cool packaging too. Bonus points to NYX for including an instruction sheet with both looks.
