As you probably know by now, I am a Mascara Maven and a discriminating one at that. I’ve been a fan of L’oreal’s Voluminous Mascara for years so I was really excited to try the new L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara ($8.99). I have very high standards. A great mascara must separate, volumize and lengthen. It must NOT smudge, flake or clump. I’m happy to say L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara ticks most of my boxes.
First we have to talk about this revolutionary wand. The mascara is named for the “Butterfly” brush. The revolutionary Butterfly Brush™ with asymmetrical lash line shape extends and lifts outer corner lashes to give you a winged-out effect, instantly volumizing lashes at the roots and stretching lashes outward. The unique Cocoon Fibers™ instantly wrap lashes in a soft, delicate veil to create silky, spectacular lashes that flutter. This is hard to describe but I really do feels like my lashes are more “fluffy” or “fanned out” with this mascara. It doesn’t make me think of a butterfly though, maybe more of an Oriental Fan.
It took a few days of getting used to the brush, but I love this mascara. I start with the comb side and then switch to the asymmetrical side and pull lashes through. I only use the comb side for lower lashes. L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara separates lashes perfectly–previously my all time fave mascara for separating lashes was Lancôme Definicils, but this beats Lancôme all to H E double hockey sticks! I also like the length I get and no clumping!! If you’re looking for high drama, look elsewhere–butterfly is for soft, fluttery lashes.
The formula is just right–not too dry or too wet, not too thin or too thick. It doesn’t make lashes feel stiff or crunchy–a big peeve of mine. Lashes feel soft and conditioned even after 8-10 hours of wear. For me what makes this mascara so unique is the lift I get from it. By that I mean my eyes look bigger and really opens them up, due to the flutter effect I suppose.
Bottom Line: L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara has a great formula, gives lovely fluffy, fanned out lashes and ticks all my boxes! If you are looking for high drama, look elsewhere.
Tip: this mascara separates so well, you will definitely need to apply eyeliner to fill in on upper lashes.
