Frugal Friday – Avon Calling!

I’m old enough to remember when Avon ladies came to the door and carried mini lipstick samples with them. My mom was an Avon lady herself so she let me play with them and therefore I blame her for my makeup addiction/obsession.  It’s always the mother’s fault anyway isn’t it?  Do these look familiar to some of you?

Well gosh, Avon you’ve come a long way baby! I know that there are still Avon ladies out there but I rarely see them toting their sample cases around anymore. I coudln’t have imagined back in the 60′s as a kid playing with Avon lipstick samples that in 2012 Avon would have a thriving website and that top celebrities would be wearing Avon cosmetics on the red carpet. This is one company that has kept up with the times!

EVERYONE is talking  about the much anticipated movie The Hungar Games, in theatres March 23rd and it’s star Jennifer Lawrence, but did you know that a few Avon products were used for her look? Aha! I didn’t think so. I think she looks lovely–a combination of sultry with her dark eyes and sweet with the pretty pink lips and glowing cheeks. Here’s the breakdown:

EYES:

Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeliner in Black ($22)

FACE:
Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Perfect Contour Powder in Blissful ($10, available in April)

Be Blushed Cheek Color by Avon in Tropical Peach ($8) and Stila Convertible Color in Peony ($25)

LIPS:

Ultra Color Rich Moisture Seduction by Avon in Nude Perfection ($7)

Yves Saint Laurent Glossy Lip Stain in Coral Aquatique ($32)

Celebrity makeup artist and Avon Global Creative Color Director Jillian Dempsey (Dr. MdDreamy’s wife) worked with Hollywood’s newest beauty, Jennifer Lawrence, prepping her for The Hunger Games Movie Premiere in LA yesterday. The buzzed about actress was cast as Katniss Everdeen, the main character in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collin’s wildly-popular novel.

“Jennifer likes to be daring with her look. She’s not afraid to really wear makeup,” said Jillian. For Jennifer’s bold and glamorous look, Jillian put the focus on Jennifer’s eyes by lining them with a deep black liner and then layering a gold eyeshadow on the actress’s lids. Using a featherbrush, Jillian blended the edges of the liner with the gold shadow. Merging the two textures and colors helped create a multidimensional effect that appeared as a sparkling black. By darkening Jennifer’s brows, Jillian further accentuated the eyes and framed her face.

To create Jennifer’s sunkissed glow, Jillian used her new Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Perfect Contour Powder in Blissful to sculpt cheeks first, then layered a custom mix of two peachy cream blushes on top. This created Jennifer’s overall soft, warm complexion. For a finishing touch, Jillian opted for a nude lip— she applied a lipstain and then swiped on a nude lipstick to achieve a creamy texture.

I had the chance to try Avon’s True Color Powder Blush in Earthen Rose, a warm terracotta/peach. This is the kind of shade that will be perfect for summer to give a fresh flush like you’ve been in the sun. The texture is so smooth and creamy it’s feel like a cream blush to the touch and the creaminess makes blending a breeze. And to that good pigmentation, great lasting power all for only $8! I’ve paid more in the drugstore! I also tried SuperSHOCK Max Mascara ($9). Although it wasn’t what I expected from the name, it was great at making lashes appear long and fluffy–the WOW factor wasn’t quite there, but if you prefer a more natural look, it’s defifnitley worth a try.

A few more celebrity looks using Avon and mark products:

Reese Witherspoon in the nation’s Capital, where she attended an event in honor of International Women’s Day. Her makeup was done by mark makeup artist Mai Quynh using products from both Avon and mark.  Mai put the focus on Reese’s eyes, layering a shimmering gold shadow over a soft blend of neutral-colored shadows. Mai then upped the drama by using a dark eyeshadow as liner and a few swipes of black mascara on lashes. For the finishing touches, Mai applied a soft rose cream blush on Reese’s cheeks and a nude-colored lipstick to enhance Reese’s natural glow.

  1. My mom was also an Avon lady in the seventies and I vividly remember that blue lipstick case. I always wanted to play with that and all the other Avon goodies on her make-up stand. The memories…sigh!

I have not used Avon in the past few years, but maybe it’s time to get reacquainted.

  2. My Mom sells Avon (started 35 years ago) and now I do too! I love the products so much. I remember those sample cases and cute lil’ lipsticks. I LOVED sample sized stuff…and still do! Amazing makeup, gifts and skin care at affordable prices. You just can’t beat it.
