This week I decided to do something different as many of you have asked me to add a bit of fashion into the mix. The reason I am combining it with Frugal Friday is that all these pieces were on sale and can be found at your local department store or at a mass retailer like Target.
This is a casual weekend or running errands outfit that I feel is easily worn by any figure type of any age. You can use pieces you already have in your closet. Even if you start from scratch, the whole outfit will only cost about $60 and you’ll look stylish and put together for a song!
For this look I’m incorporating the bright trend into my weekend wear. Whether you decide to go with a monochromatic look, color blocking or just add a bright accessory or two, you’ll look chic and on trend.
I started out by embracing the colored denim trend with these Kelly green straight leg jeans by Charter Club from Macy’s. Charter Club is a house brand from Macy’s that does an over 40 woman proud. They have basic wardrobe pieces like pants and tops in several different silhouettes to fit any body type, plus they add in a few trendy pieces in so we don’t look like old ladies in mumu’s. I bought these Kelly green jeans (does that remind anyone else of Captain Kangaroo?) on sale for only $16 and I honestly can’t believe how much I’ve worn them! They have been a staple this spring. Of course you could substitute any color–I’m partial to marine blue, but you could find red, purple, teal–whatever color appeals to you. If you feel too self conscious in bright shades, opt for a pastel–a mint green, pale yellow baby blue or pink. For you skinny girls, substitute a straight leg jean for a skinny one in a bright or pastel color. I also think you could skip a jacket and wear a cute chambray shirt either tied at the waist or open.
Add a simple white short sleeved t-shirt or tank as a layering piece. I have a few short sleeved white Tees but if you don’t have one or if it’s seen better days, Target, JC Penny’s or Kohl’s are great places to find basic tees for less than $10. I think I paid $8 for mine last year. Mix your brights: a red pant with a marine blue top, etc.
Next I added a navy & white polka dot knit crop blazer. I love Kelly green and navy together and I thought this added a nice pop without being loud. I didn’t want necessarily want to add another bright piece on top because I didn’t want to end up looking clownish. This little jacket was on the clearance rack at Target and a steal at $8.98! It’s a lightweight knit and has some stretch to it. I usually wear it with the sleeves pushed up. It also looks adorbs with white jeans and a light pink tee or tank underneath too. Or you could do yellow, red, jeans, etc, etc. Anyway, this will be a versatile jacket for me to wear in the summer on cool mornings, rainy days (like today) or in the evenings.
I finished out the outfit with these ballet flats ($19.99) again from Target. They are navy & white stripe edged in tan leather with a bow. I believe they come in red and white too. They have a little of cushioning inside and are fairly comfortable, however the soles are on the thin side so don’t walk over gravel or cobblestones! You can also change the entire look by switching up the shoes. A neutral or bold wedge or a flat gladiator sandal in a gold or silver would look fab too!
I also added a gold, navy and teal necklace I had laying around from who know’s where or when. I find great costume jewelry (often on sale) at JC Penney’s, Target, Macy’s and Ann Taylor LOFT. A white or yellow cross body bag completes the look.
The entire outfit costs only $53! I did use jewelry and a bag I already owned but you could easily replicate this look with something from your own closet.
Not comfortable with wearing bright clothes? Add a pop of color with accessories. A bright bag, shoe or jewelry can accomplish the same thing. Combine bright accessories with another seasonal trend–black and white. How chic would a black & white sheath dress look with a fuchsia or turquoise bag? Go ahead, everyone needs a healthy dose of bold color in the summer!
