Elizabeth Arden celebrated her 100 year anniversary in 2010 and I’m celebrating my 1 year anniversary this month–how serendipitous! Elizabeth Arden has a special place in my heart and my memories. My mother was a skin care fanatic and had a plethora of lotions and jars on her vanity which always included Elizabeth Arden. She also would talk with reverence about the iconic Red Door Spa–not that she was ever able to go there, but she and her friends would discuss the latest celebrity spotted at the luxurious Red Door.
My personal memory of Elizabeth Arden cosmetics came early in my modeling career. Back in the Dark Ages, my agency didn’t reach Ford or Elite status so most of us had to apply our own makeup. Just before I was booked for a huge wedding show, my sister and I attended a special Elizabeth Arden event at a local department store. We learned about skin care and how to apply makeup like a pro as well as received a big ‘Red Door’ box of cosmetics. That was probably when my love of makeup was born- or ignited! In doing research on Miss Arden, I discovered she pioneered the creation of the “makeover” and was the first in the cosmetics business to train and send out a team of traveling demonstrators and saleswomen. She was a true innovator!

Created in 1930 by Elizabeth Arden to soothe skin, Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant became an instant and overwhelming success. What made it so effective is a combination of petrolatum, a skin-soothing beta-hydroxy in one of its first cosmetic uses, and vitamin E. The apricot colored balm was so beneficial to her clients; even its name came about thanks to a remarkable performance – a loyal client used it to treat her child’s skinned knee and “eight hours later” the skin was all better.
