In direct opposition to some of the non-traditional offerings this holiday season, (I’m looking at you Chanel & Dolce Gabanna), Dior has chosen to go the traditional route and feature golds and blacks in their Five Golds eye shadow palette and I’m soooo glad they did. The entire Holiday Collection includes:
- Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Five Golds ($58.00, available at Dior counters and Sephora)
- Dior 5-Colour Iridescent in Endless Shine ($58.00, available at Dior counters)
- Dior Minaudiere palette in Pink Golds ($80, available at all Dior counters)
- Dior Minaudiere palette in Grey Golds ($80, available at Saks Fifth Avenue)
- Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen in Gold Edition ($36.00, available at Dior counters and Sephora)
- Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Pink Stiletto ($27, available at Dior counters)
- Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Black Lame ($27, available at Sephora)
- Dior Vernis in Czarina Gold ($21, available at Dior counters)
- Dior Vernis in Timeless Gold ($21.00, available at Dior counters and Sephora)
I’d like to concentrate on the Five Golds Eye Shadow Quint today. After seeing a picture of the palette on the Sephora website, I knew I had to have it and took advantage of the Sephora Friends & Family sale to purchase it. When it arrived it was so glorious it took me a few days to dig in.
These are all shimmering, glowy shades with dimension; the bottom left is a very sheer pale gold with sparkles–very delicate, the upper left is a deep matte charcoal grey with silver microshimmer, upper right is a coppery bronze, lower left a rich brown with a bit of gold and the center is a cool metallic silver.
The quality is typical Dior–pigmented, soft and buttery smooth and highly blendable. A word about the pigmentation–these shadows are sheer and of medium pigmentation; the pale gold is especially sheer but I believe it is meant to be so, it could even be used as a topcoat. Five Golds is designed for an ethereal and sophisticated evening eye which makes it ideal for holiday parties and special events. Even though the shadows have microglitter, there is absolutely NO fallout.
NOTE: the pale gold is heaviy swatched so it would show up in the photo–I used a base with all swatches. Mascara in these photos is my new fav, Chanel Intimitable Intense.
There are so many lovely and endless combinations you can create with this palette. The shimmery shades make for a gorgeous daytime/work appropriate look, while the pale icy gold, metallic silver and deep charcoal would make a stunning smoky nighttime look. Here is a daytime look I did with the pale gold under the brow bone and on the inner corner, the coppery bronze on the lid and the brown in the crease and to line. I tried and tried to get good pictures but these do not do justice to the complex and multi-dimensional properties of these shadows.
Packaging: the typical elegant Dior blue compact
Quality: soft, buttery texture, blends easily
Value: definitely a splurge. As with all quints you are getting 5 eye shadows for $58, while the Dior single eye shadows are $28 each
Best For: a versatile holiday palette suitable for day or nighttime looks. A good combination of warm and cool shades for all skin types. Some may be disappointed with the medium pigmentation.
Overall: Dior Five Golds Eye Shadow Quint gets a gold star from me! A gorgeous, shimmery eye shadow palette with multifaceted shades that work day or night. It’s a splurge for sure–if you are a Dior fan you will want this for your collection, if not you can probably dupe the look with a less expensive brand–just don’t expect the quality or uniqueness of the shades.
