Deck of Scarlet Makeup Suscription Box 2018!

Press Sample

Deck of Scarlet is a makeup subscription box; you receive one makeup palette every two months. All the products you need to create multiple makeup looks are included for just $29.95. There is lots of love about this sub box! First, you get product every TWO months instead of one so you won’t be overwhelmed. Second, you KNOW what you’re getting, you can preview the palette. You will always get a makeup palette + an extra or two (all full sized) and no samples that will end up in the back of your makeup drawer gathering dust. Third, all the palettes are limited edition and are made in collaboration with a popular YouTuber and designed to give you multiple looks in one palette. Fourth, the YouTuber that designed that months palette provides three looks and a tutorial so you don’t have to guess how to use it. And finally, you can skip a month if you aren’t interested in that months palette or cancel at any time. Win!

Deck of Scarlet was kind enough to send me this months (January/February) featured palette, Edition #06 by YouTuber Nikkia Joy. I just started following her and she is so pretty and fun to watch. She’s not silly or loud and she doesn’t drop the F bomb every two seconds like so many people I find on YouTube. What I like most about her is that she gives lots of tips and easy to follow how-to videos. Nikkia Joy says “The palette is inspired by midnight skies and I created 3 very different looks using it!”

The mysteries of the midnight sky inspired this ultra-elegant, darkly daring palette. It starts with greys as deep as the universe, and the subtle sparkle that escapes from Gravity. Eyes get touched with a golden Aurora;face is illuminated with pure Stardust. On lips: Venus, a bold berry so intensely captivating, nothing escapes its allure. Each ultra-pigmented shade in this curated, edgy-yet-wearable collection delivers dense, dramatic color. Go fierce. Go bold. Go dark. Just go. #DeckOfScarlett

The palette consists of 3 eyeshadows, two lip colors, a highlighter, a blush and a separate liquid liner.

Eyeshadow

  • Aurora – lovely, shimmery pale yellow gold sparkle
  • Space – medium matte gray (Nikkia calls it a taupe brown, I disagree)
  • Gravity – shimmery gray sparkle

Stardust is a champagne shimmering highlighter, Stellar a dusty mauve blush. There are two lip colors: Astro, a taupe brown (a signature Nikkia Joy color) and Venus, rich pink burgundy. Also included is a liquid liner in the shade Galaxy, a charcoal gray, perfect for us over 40 gals. Deep black can look too harsh on older eyes and actually makes us look older so I’m thrilled with this gray shade. It has a very, very fine point which I appreciate–it makes it easier to use with fewer mess ups. Of course, you can press down harder to get a thicker line.

The packaging is exceptional. The Deck of Scarlet palette is presented in a sleek black box which houses the palette along with a card from the Artist-in-Chief. Inside is a sleeve with original artwork and the study cardboard palette is in that. The artwork for this palette is stunning! I don’t know who the artist is, but they definitely deserve a shout out! I can see why makeup junkies like me collect these palettes!

The attention to detail of this palette is much appreciated. The top of the palette is split so that you can access the powder products separate from the lip products and so that they don’t mix together. Hallelujah! Truthfully, I haven’t used lip products in pans for this exact reason so I’m thrilled to see Deck of Scarlet address this issue so thoughtfully.

There are a few things that make this palette a bit unique. It’s a mostly cooler toned palette which is getting harder and harder to find. 2017 seemed to be the year of the warm palette, we saw TONS of oranges and burgundies. Also, Nikkia Joy says ALL the powders in the palette can be used on the eyes and she does, in fact, use Stellar, the blush and Stardust, the highlight as eyeshadows in her video. The lip colors are not something I would ever choose for myself, but that’s the fun of getting a subscription like this, so you can play with color and maybe go out of your comfort zone.

As for the quality, all the shadows have a nice texture, not too powdery and not chalky with good pigment. The blush and highlighter are gorgeous! I don’t believe I have a blush like this in my collection. I was afraid of it in the pan but used with a duo fiber brush and a light hand, it’s very, very pretty. The highlighter is pretty and subtle–no blinding shiny you-can-see-it-from-space look. The to lip products are completely opposite: Astro is neutral, Venus is in-you-face berry. The consistency is different too-Astro is much harder in the and Venus is almost too creamy. I dipped my finger in to swirl and it melted on contact. Still, I think it’s a beautiful shade. While I wouldn’t wear Astro alone for fear of looking like a zombie, it looks very pretty under Venus and tones Venus done a bit for daytime wear.

This is my take on the Date Night look. I applied Stellar in the crease, Aurora on the lid and Space in the outer corner. I used Stardust on the brow bone and the inner corner of the eye. I applied Stellar on the cheeks and used Astro for my lip.

My modification of the Artistic look: Space in the upper crease, Gravity packed on the lid, Stardust on the brow bone and inner corner and winged liner with Galaxy liquid liner. For this look, I layered Astro lipstick with Venus on top.

Products are 100% cruelty-free, paraben free, and made in the USA.

Overall, I’m quite happy with the January/February Deck of Scarlet Palette from Nikkia Joy. I think it’s a really fun idea and I can’t wait to see the next palette! Get 30% off and  Subscribe Here

What do you think? Is $29.99 every two months for a makeup palette curated by a Vlogger, YouTuber or Beauty Influencer worth it to you?

  • Lola Seicento

What a stunning palette! I love the colors selected, and the look that you created is very pretty!

  • Laura Samson-Exner

What a great palette. I love that the subscription doesn’t come every month so you don’t have random beauty products laying around you might not use. I also love that there are corresponding tutorial videos. These have been a life saver for me

    • I love the way they have set up the subscription!

  • Krystal Butherus

Awesome palette! I can appreciate some video tutorials for everything, even makeup. They can be very inspirational.

    • Every time I watch YouTube, I want to try a new look!

  • Allison @neversaydiebeauty

I love the cool toned shades in this wonderful palette. $29.95 every 2 months with the option to pass is a really good deal. I don’t care about the You Tuber aspect but the fact that you get full size stuff is terrific.

    • Yeah, the every 2 months really appeals to me.

  • Lesley

I recently started wearing makeup, even though I’m in my late 30s, and I always struggle with finding the right colors for me.

    • Look at the veins on underside of your wrist. If they look green, you are most likely warm toned, if they look blue, you are probably cool toned. Just knowing this can help a lot.

  • Your makeup look is always stunning!

  • Toya Ammon

Nice cool color palette and the price is pretty good too. Your MUP looks gorgeous. Thank you for info on the subscription and yes the art work is stunning!!

  • marciaf

Love this. i’ve heard of Deck of Scarlett but I didn’t really know anything about it. Every other month is great and being able to say no to a month even better.

  • I love the date night look. It is one of this day makeup looks that make you look sweet and it doesn’t look like you are wearing a lot of makeup.

  • I love the eyeshadows but am not a fan of the lipsticks.

  • Reesa Lewandowski

OH these colors are hot!!! They really aren’t much my style though, but I still love them!

    • They aren’t something I would normally wear either, but after Nikkia Joy’s video, I was able to adapt them more to my style.

  • Jennifer G

I am totally in love with all these colours. They are so dramatic. I need some new makeup too so I am going to have to check this out.

  • Not a fan of heavy photoshopping in their promo photos, but the palettes are beautiful!

    • I agree with that but I do like the palette!

  • Nailil Ivaldi

Those colors are gorgeous. Love every shade and the slight shimmer they have.

    • The finish on the shadows is great and I like that I can use the blush and highlighter as shadows too.

  • Love the shimmer on the brow. Makeup palettes are so much fun to play with!

  • shoshana sue

What a beautiful palette! I have to be honest, I usually buy eyeshadow and lipstick at Walmart, but this will make me consider going the subscription route. Very nice

  • all_the_words025

Such gorgeous shades! I love that the palette protects the cream products from the powders. A really nice touch.

  • Love these colors and your eyes are amazing. Wish I could do that when I apply eyeshadow. The price seems reasonable but love that the brand is cruelty free and paraben free.
