Heaven knows you are all familiar with my obsession with makeup. Uh, h-e-l-l-ooo, I have an entire website devoted to it. However, for many more years, I have been a fashionista since before that term was ever invented. I started reading Seventeen magazine and following trends at the age of fourteen. I also had serious aspirations of becoming a supermodel like my role models Christie Brinkley, Patti Hansen, Jeri Hall, Margaux Hemingway and Susan Dey among others I can’t remember. In an effort to bring my dream to fruition, I sewed a few outfits; sadly, my sewing skills were lacking and I ended up with two left sides of a jumpsuit not once… but twice. I had to keep going back to Modern Drug, (the fashion capital of our town) for more fabric and I’m sure I purchased the entire bolt. Of course I considered my handmade fashions “haute couture”, as the styles I chose were in all the magazines at the time. After my runway clothes were ready, I enlisted the help of my amateur photographer brother-in-law to take snapshots for my “portfolio.”  The pictures were terribly fashion forward; like posing on my 5 year old niece’s swing set or in a pile of dry leaves. I know, I know, we were ahead of our time.
When my project was complete, I wrote to Wilhelmina Models, my agency of choice. I explained my interest in the field of modeling and that I thought I was a good candidate at 5′ 8′ and 105 lbs. Â I received a very sweet letter telling me Wilhelmina herself had the same goals as a young girl and to keep working toward my dream. She did suggest that I should perhaps wait until my braces were off before pursuing a career in modeling. Good advice Willie!
Years later, in my early 20′s, I did realize my dream and became a model–of sorts, I did a lot of local and regional modeling. I didn’t get a lot of print work (not that there was ever much to be had), but I was always chosen for runway shows. As a model, my love for fashion grew deeper and stronger, and then spending twenty plus years in fashion retail really ignited my passion.
Yes, my fashionista roots are deep and wide. They extend to not only clothes, but accessories as well. The perfect accessory can make an ordinary outfit special and help to define your personal style. In fact, nothing showcases your personal style like a few well chosen accessories. I especially love costume jewelry for this purpose and have a nice collection from the jewelry designer Amrita Singh. Using inspiration from her travels in India, Amrita’s designs are both original and unique. These are substantial pieces, all evoking a certain mood or memory. While I have several of her pieces in my collection, I am especially fond of her bangle bracelets. There is nothing more feminine than hearing the slight tinkle of bracelets on a woman’s wrist. Now that feeling can be yours too! Many of my co-workers have complimented me on my jewelry and now you have a chance to discover Amrita Singh designs for yourself! I’m talking to you Nancy, Joy and Kandi! The kind people at Amrita Singh have generously offered to sponsor a giveaway. I will giveaway this beautiful Alanna bangle set from the Bangle Bangle collection to one lucky reader! The Alanna is an 18 pc. metal, ivory resin and beaded set. It measures 3″ when stacked.
