When I was approached to review Caswell-Massey soaps I happily agreed as I love handmade soaps: the pretty bars, the scents, the packaging. My mother always had the most beautiful soaps in antique dishes in all the bathrooms in our house so I’m a bit of a soap snob.

I have heard of Caswell-Massey but I wasn’t sure why so I did a little research. Caswell-Massey was founded in 1752 in Newport, Rhode Island and is treasured American brand with a strong heritage in personal care and fragrance products derived from natural ingredients. The New York Botanical Garden, established in 1891, is world-renowned as a botanical authority and a ‘verdant oasis’ in NYC, whose beauty has served to inspire generations of visitors, including Caswell-Massey’s namesake owners. This month Caswell-Massey is partnering with NYBG to launch three exquisitely crafted luxury soaps in three classic floral fragrances: Lilac, Gardenia and Honeysuckle as well as hand creams in the same three scents. All products will feature NYBG branded packaging and botanical illustrations from the Rare Book and Folio Collections of NYBG’s LuEsther T. Mertz Library, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these products will support NYBG’s work in plant research and conservation, horticulture, and education. I can’t think of a more perfect collaboration!

When I opened the package I could tell right away these were high quality soaps because the scents did not assault me, rather they instantly transported me to a beautiful outdoor garden. The NYBG Trio of Florals Three Bar Soap Set ($24) includes one each of Lilac, Gardenia, and Honeysuckle 3.25 oz bar soaps. These lovely soaps are triple milled and vegetable based. The lather is luxurious and provides long lasting hydration plus deep conditioning without stripping the skins natural oils.

White – Gardenia. When I was in my 20s I worked at Nordstrom and did some modeling for them. In one fashion show, I modeled a gorgeous dress I ended up buying for myself. The fabric had a soft peach background with big white gardenia flowers on it. It was a shirt dress style with a full skirt and the show coordinator had me wear a real gardenia flower in my hair. I could smell it through the whole show and I felt so feminine and beautiful. I still love that dress, though it was a size 4 so there’s that.

Purple – Lilac. We have tons of lilac bushes where I live. Spokane is called the Lilac City and the 7 ½ mile Bloomsday run held in May of every year was named for the Lilacs that bloom every spring. This soap smells exactly like the real thing!

Pink-Honeysuckle. When I was kid of about five growing up in Southern California, our neighbors had a pink honeysuckle plant in their backyard and I used to watch the hummingbirds drink from it. Opening this soap took me right back to my five-year-old self!

You can also get a set of three soaps in just one of the three fragrances. These sets are so elegantly presented in the pretty box they make an excellent hostess, friend or teacher gift.

Caswell-Massey soaps are made in the USA, paraben free, sulfate free, phthalate free and not tested on animals.

Future plans for the partnership include the development of a unique fragrance utilizing the botanicals found at NYBG. This exciting project will meld knowledge and experience of both master gardeners and renowned perfumers from fragrance industry leader International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). Work on the new scent has already begun.
