bareMinerals Skincare With ActiveSoil Complex: Get Dirty

I often referred to myself as “older than dirt.”  Who knew I was actually giving myself a compliment? Earlier this month, bareMinerals debuted a newly reformulated and repackaged skincare line. In keeping with the Bare Escentuals philosophy that things from the earth (aka minerals), are good for you, the new line features an ingredient called RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex that’s 100% pure.

“Extracted from nutritionally dense virgin soil, our proprietary RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex contains a blend of 72 essential macro and micro minerals that dramatically improve the appearance of skin by increasing cell turnover and providing antioxidants at levels significantly greater than blueberries or pomegranates.”

I guess it makes sense–for upteen years spas have been wrapping women in mud packs to get rid of toxins right? The way I see it, this is just another missed opportunity–if my mother hadn’t made me scrub behind my ears during all those childhood baths, I may have absorbed some good dirt, and therefore I would have a better complexion by now–thanks a lot mom! I digress.

The line consists of:

  • Exfoliating Treatment Cleanser ($26)
  • Purifying Facial Cleanser ($20)
  • Deep Cleansing Foam ($20)
  • Purely Nourishing Cream -Dry Skin ($28)
  • Purely Nourishing Moisturizer – Combo Skin ($28)
  • Firming Eye Treatment ($28)
  • Pure Transformation Night Treatment ($60)

I was able to try several products in the line ahead of the launch so I have been using the following products for about a month now; Purifying Facial Cleanser, Purely Nourishing Cream for Dry Skin, the Firming Eye Treatment and the Pure Transforming Night Treatment. Here are my thoughts on each product.

Purifying Facial Cleanser – I really like this cleanser and in fact, didn’t realize how much until I stopped using it to test out another brand and my skin dried out very quickly. It has a creamy consistency,  is gentle but will remove waterproof eye makeup without irritation.  I like a cleanser with dual purpose, it saves me a step each night. Two pumps is all I need for my face and neck and it works beautifully with my Skinsonic. The BE Purifying Cleanser is very similar to the original Purity Made Simple by Philosophy. However, Purity Made Simple is $20 for 8oz. and BE Purifying Cleanser is $20 for 6 oz. It’s worth noting what   BE Purifying Facial Cleanser doesn’t have in it: Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes, Petrochemicals, Phthalates, GMOs or Triclosan. This alone is a good enough reason for me to go with Bare Escentuals.

Purely Nourishing Cream -Dry Skin this moisturizer is rich and luxurious feeling–almost too rich for my combo/partially-dry/schizo skin. It’s recommended for use day and night but I can only use it at night or my skin gets shiny which I detest. I’m getting really tired of my forehead being used as a flashlight 🙂  For those of you with drier skin, this would be perfect!

Firming Eye Treatment –  I try a gazillion eye creams and this is one of the best as far as being emollient without being greasy. It absorbs fully and leaves the under eye area soft but not slick. I can touch my eye in the middle of the day and it still feels hydrated. The best thing about this eye cream is the instant firming–you can feel the tightness immediately. Based on an independent consumer study of the Firming Eye Treatment:
– 85% of women felt the eye area looked firmer, more youthful and revived with continued use
– 94% of women agreed the eye area looked and felt softer and smoother both immediately and with continued use
– 70% of women saw an instant reduction of puffiness around the eye area

Pure Transformation Night Treatment – I don’t really get this. It’s a powder treatment intended to be used as the last step in your nighttime skin routine. The delivery system is a very soft brush which feels great on the skin. It’s supposed to dramatically reduce the appearance of pores, even skin tone, and improve skin’s texture. From the BE website:“This concentrated powder formula replenishes skin while you sleep so you’ll wake up to the famous bareMinerals naturally luminous glow.” Admittedly, I’ve only used this twice and used it alone. I’m going to need more time to give this a fair test and use the dry skin cream underneath. It comes in 4 shades which I don’t understand either–why would you care what shade it is if you’re sleeping in it? On the Sephora site, a few people have said they used this as a foundation. I have the clear shade which does give some color on my fair skin, but mostly an over the top shimmer–I look like a Christmas ornament and my pores like moon craters. I can imagine wearing it as a foundation! Amazingly, it does not come off on your pillow or bedding. I will update after more proper testing.

Overall: Bare Escentuals Skincare is a good line with several nice products at reasonable prices. I’m not sure it lives up to all it’s claims, however I liked most of the products I tried. The products give good hydration and feel good on the skin. They all have a slight lavender scent but it’s not overpowering or long lasting.

Great review Cindy! I was so curious about their new line as I love BE! The eye firming cream looks very promising! I’ve tried Korres and now I’m using Yes to Cucumbers eye gel during the day. Might have to stop by and grab it to try!

Considering I pay as much as $60 for a good eye cream, BE’s is really affordable too!

  • “virgin soil” sounds better than MUD or DIRT! You crack me up!

  • I always say that I’m older than dirt. We must be mind twins. I wasn’t sure if this skincare would be right for me but you make it sound good. I never did figure out the night treatment and never knew what to say to customers when they’d ask me.

If Bare Escentuals is made out of dirt – why would I buy it? I don’t want to put dirt on my face. Why would this be beneficial?
