All Drugstore Makeup FOTD Part 1: Complexion

Purchased by me

It’s been a hot minute since I did a full face of the day using only drugstore makeup. There were SO many great drugstore products launched in 2017 it was quite easy! Mass Market brands have really stepped it up, with some products said to be dupes for high-end brands. In fact, there are so many great products I have done this FOTD in two parts: this first post is a review of all the complexion products I used and the second post will be for the makeup products. Let’s get started!

I started with NYX Born To Glow Illuminating Primer $13.99 – My good friend Phyrra recommended this to me when I was looking for a good drugstore primer. I like this one because though it imparts a nice glow, it is NOT glittery or sparkly. I put my foundation over it for a pearlescent lit-from-within look.

Next, I tried the new Maybelline Superstay Full Coverage 24hour Foundation ($11.99) – I’ve been dying to try this new foundation and my Walgreen’s FINALLY got their display. It was a small display and there were only a few bottles left so I chose the shade #120 Classic Ivory. If it was available, I would have chosen Buff Beige which has more pink in it. As it is, Classic Ivory works. The claims Maybelline makes about this foundation are incredible: oil-free, doesn’t clog pores, Dermatologist tested, full-coverage foundation with a seamless finish, evens out, camouflages, and enhances, minimizes the appearance of flaws and imperfections and glides onto skin for smooth and breathable wear. Uh, HELL to the yes! It also purports to last 24 hours though realistically do we really need a foundation to last a full 24 hours? Not me but whatev. Here is a pic of my face half with makeup half without. The left side has foundation, the right is without. You can see how it covers my brown spots and red cheeks.

I like to use a full-coverage foundation to cover my brown spots, some redness and texture issue I have in my T-zone from having oily skin as a teen. I believe this is supposed to be a matte finish so I was worried it might look cakey with my dry winter skin so I prepped with a hydrating serum, good moisturizer and the NYX glow primer above. By the way, I used another drugstore favorite, my Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($5.99). It works just as well as a beauty blender and I love that it has a flat side for my forehead and sides of my face as well as the pointed tip. I also use the Real Techniques Miracle Mini Eraser Sponge to apply concealer, to sweep away eyeshadow fallout and pick up mascara mistakes.

Back to the foundation! It blends in like a dream, dries down to a velvety finish and feels like you’re not wearing any makeup. Truth! It doesn’t settle into lines which is, hello….amazing and the coverage is incredible. Another thing I LOVE about this foundation is that it doesn’t transfer! I tend to lose the foundation on my chin and this didn’t budge even after eating! It even seems to fill in pores a bit rather than sitting on top like some foundations do. Another bonus: it does NOT cling to dry patches so it’s great for over 40 gals. I know it’s unbelievable, but this foundation looked as good at the 10-hour mark as when I put it on. I cannot attest to 24-hour wear because I ain’t stayin’ up for 24 hours to test it. This broad needs her beauty sleep ‘ya feel me?

An up-close look

Maybelline had a BOGO 50% off so I picked up quite a bit of the brand. Next up is the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer ($6.99). I chose shade #15 Fair and I probably should have gone up one shade but it’s fine for my undereye area to brighten. It’s very smooth and spreads nicely. The finish is described as natural so it doesn’t have as much coverage as my Holy Grail concealer, Urban Decay Naked in Light Neutral. It’s not drying or cakey and is supposed to be for the waaay more expensive ($35) NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer.

Bloggers, Vloggers and YouTubers have been singing the praises of the eponymous Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder ($7.99) for years so I decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. Wow! Just wow! I guess if this powder has been around since 1935, I should trust it’s a good product, right? This stuff is Ah-MAZING! It’s super, super finely milled and it really, really helps diffuse imperfections for a beautiful flawless finish. What I was most impressed about was how it lessened the ‘orange peel’ texture I have on my nose and chin. It comes with a nice fluffy puff and it does have a strong old lady kind of scent but it doesn’t translate to the skin. It’s great as an all-over setting powder and to set your concealer. I’m SO glad I tried it, this is going to be a staple in my makeup routine. Oh, and you get a TON of product so it will be years before I’ll have to buy another jar.

And finally, to add a little glow, I picked up the Wet n’ Wild MegaGlo Hello Halo Liquid Highlighter ($5.99). This is available in 7 shades from a cool white to a warm bronze. I got Halo, Goodbye a pretty pale pink and a total dupe for Benefit’s High Beam Liquid Highlighter which is 4 times the price! These little lights deliver a multi-shimmer glow thanks to its shimmering pearl pigments. The hydrating formula is infused with Murumuru Seed Butter, Grapeseed Oil, and Vitamin E to help smooth out the skin’s texture. They have a big doe foot applicator that makes it easy-peasy to sweep on cheekbones.

It amazes me the extent to which drugstore brands have tightened that gap between their products and department store brands. It used to be that drugstore brands were seriously lacking in quality, pigmentation etc., but that is simply no longer true. This is a very nice selection of drugstore picks, and I love the gorgeous look that you created! I need to pick up that Wet n’ Wild MegaGlo Hello Halo Liquid Highlighter! It is so beautiful!

    • There are so many shades of the highlighter too!

  • Krystal Butherus

It’s awesome to see the advances in quality products that drugstore brands have made. I love the selections you chose.

    • Thank you. It can be daunting trying to decide which drugstore products are good so I like to feature the best of the best.

  • Melissa Chapman

I am not a big user of makeup except when I go to events or out to a party. These are great ideas and the results are amazing, I will look for these at our stores.

  • Cara Harbstreet

I’m a fan of Maybelline products too. I’m not one to spend a lot of makeup in general so I really like tutorials like this that showcase how much you can really do with drugstore products. Thanks for sharing!

  • Allison @neversaydiebeauty

I want one of the Wet N Wild liquid highlighters. They look so pretty. I agree that you can get wonderful makeup at the drugstore these days.

    • There are lots of shades of the highlighter, I really should have picked up more.

  • tayloraube

The Maybelline looks great on you, I love this post because I always like to read reviews on makeup before I spend the money on it!

  • Everything you showed looks amazing, but I really want to to try that foundation now that I’ve run out of the Covergirl one I was using. This one sounds like the type of coverage and staying power that I like.

  • You created an amazing look that can be worn any day of the week. Great job!

  • serena

Thanks for sharing this. I love reading these reviews. There is something awesome when someone else gets to try before I buy 🙂

  • marciaf

I want to pick up one of the WnW higlighters too. It doesn’t look like it shows any pores! What do you think of the fragrance of the Maybelline and Coty? That’s why I don’t buy as much from the drugstore as I do from higher end brands. Your skin looks great with the foundation.

    • The Coty powder has a very strong scent when you open the jar but it doesn’t last when it’s on the skin. I didn’t notice any scent with the Maybelline fdtn.

  • Maria Katsulos

I’ve been hearing that the Real Techniques sponge is just as good as the Beauty Blender, but with a much more realistic price point!!

    • I think so, I also LOVE the smaller one for concealer!

  • Jen Mathews

I love the new Wet n Wild highlighters! I need to review those soon!

    • Now I wish I would have bought more shades.

  • Kathryne

The wet n wild ones caught my fancy!

  • Brianne Manz

I couldn’t agree with you more! My face cream is bought right from a drugstore and it works perfectly. I have to check your brands out too!

  • I wasn’t big on primer until I saw this illuminating one here. I am going to find it and give it a try. I need a little umph.

  • Kimberly Lewis (Lou Lou Girls)

I always buy my makeup at the drug store. Again, you are introducing me to new products

  • I think maybe people in their early 20s need a foundation that lasts 24 hours. Haha. They work during the day and go out into the early morning. Or they spend the night with someone and don’t want to see them without makeup. But it’s great that they make one that lasts! Back when I wore foundation, I always felt naked when I didn’t have it.

    • I used to go without fdtn well into my 30’s but now that I’m in my 6th decade I feel I need it to cover up the sins of my youth!

  • I’ve seen a few people say that the Maybelline 24 Hour Foundation is to dry for dry skin types but now that you’ve talked about it I may have to try to pick it up for myself.

    • You do need a hydrating primer and a good moisturizer underneath.

  • Brittany Muddamalle

Ooh I would love to find a new foundation that works well for my skin. I have a hard time finding ones that work well for my sensitive skin.

These are some great finds and you look lovely! I’m all about drugstore make up as I don’t really have the budget for high end. I love hearing recommendations for products I need to try next!

  • Jessica Terry

I am not a woman who wears all that much makeup but I do like my drugstore brands and use them often. This year I have decided to do my makeup more often because even though I work at home, there is no reason I can’t look good too!

  • I really like what you had to say about that NYX Born To Glow Illuminating Primer. I think I may give it a try!

  • Ayana Pitterson

I have to check outt that NYX primer. Right up my alley when it comes to pricing as well. Thanks for sharing.

I love NYX, they have some great products. I don’t wear much make up but when I do, it is from drugstores. I love learning about what to be on the look out for when I’m shopping.

  • adapperchick

I’m not much of a makeup person, but I would see my friends swear by makeup from the drugstore.
